Explained How GPA and CGPA Are Calculated
The GPA Formula
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of your grades, where each course's grade is weighted by its credit hours.
GPA vs CGPA
- GPA — the average for a single semester or term.
- CGPA — the cumulative GPA across all semesters completed so far.
- CGPA uses the same formula but sums all courses from all semesters.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
GPA = (Sum of grade points × credits) ÷ (Sum of credits). Each course contributes its grade point multiplied by its credit hours. For example, if you take a 3-credit A (4.0) and a 4-credit B (3.0): GPA = (3×4.0 + 4×3.0) ÷ (3+4) = 24 ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA is the grade point average for a single semester or term. CGPA is the cumulative grade point average across all semesters completed so far. CGPA uses the same formula but includes all your courses.
What is a 4.0 GPA scale?
A 4.0 scale assigns numeric points to letter grades: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with plus/minus variations (A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.) in between.
How do I calculate CGPA from GPA?
CGPA = (Total quality points across all semesters) ÷ (Total credit hours across all semesters). Simply add up all the (grade × credits) values from every semester and divide by the sum of all credits.
Can I convert percentage to GPA?
A common rule of thumb is GPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4 on a 4.0 scale — e.g., 85% ≈ 3.4. However, actual conversion varies widely between institutions, so always check your school's official policy.
What is a good GPA?
On a 4.0 scale: 3.5+ is generally considered excellent; 3.0–3.5 is good; 2.0–3.0 is satisfactory; below 2.0 typically puts a student on academic probation. Competitive graduate programs often look for 3.5 or higher.
Does the grade chart show course difficulty?
No. The grade chart shows how many of your courses fall into each letter grade category — it's a count of courses, not a difficulty score. It's a quick way to see the distribution of your grades at a glance.
What if my school uses a different grading scale?
Use whichever scale matches your school's official policy. Our calculator supports the most common 4.0, 5.0, and 10.0 scales. If you need a custom scale, you can approximate by picking the nearest option and adjusting grades accordingly.
